Grasses for Use with Wildflowers

For most areas of the United States and Canada, we recommend planting Hard Fescue or Sheep Fescue. For the southeastern states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina, and for Hawaii, Tall Fescue is preferable. Plant fescues at a rate of 10-15 Ibs. per acre. The native grasses are slower growing than fescues. These warm-season grasses are usually planted for aesthetic and ecological reasons rather than prompt stabilization of soil. We recommend the following planting rates: Blue Grama, 2 pounds PLS per acre; Buffalo Grass, 5 pounds PLS per acre; Little Bluestem, 3 pounds PLS per acre; Sideoats Grama, 3 pounds PLS per acre; Big Bluestem, 3 pounds PLS per acre.

Our Wildflower mixtures do not contain grass seed or any filler. These mixtures are blended to give the widest possible range of colors and periods of bloom. Very few wildflowers bloom continually throughout the season; therefore, we have included spring, summer, and fall-blooming species in each mixture. All mixtures require full sun to very light shade, with the exception of our Shade Mixture. We strive for a balance of annuals and perennials so that good results are obtained the first season as well as in subsequent seasons. High quality standards ensure that our mixtures have high germination and purity, and this information is printed on every order.

Mixture	Description
Aggressive Amendment	A mixture of aggressive annuals and perennials to be used as a supplement to our Regional or Special-Use mixtures. Use a 1:1 ratio of this mix and the standard mix and plant at the rate recommended for the standard mix.
Annuals for Sun	An all annual mixture with a wide range of colors. Use for reseeding purposes or where an ongoing annual display is desired.
Bird & Butterfly Mixture	An annual and perennial mix of flowers to attract seed-eating birds and butterflies.
Dry Mixture	An annual and perennial mix for arid / Dryland regions that receive up to 30 inches of rainfall annually. Also suitable for very well draining soils.
Golf Course Mixture	An all annual mix with a wide range of colors. It has bright, showy flowers that are suitable for areas near tees, greens, lakes or around the clubhouse.
Knee-Hi Mixture	An annual and perennial mix that is less than 24 inches high. Provides a neater appearance than taller mixes. Good for sites where height is a factor.
Low-Growing Mixture	An annual and perennial mix that is less than 16 inches high. Provides a manicured appearance which is ideal for sites where height is a factor.
Moist Mixture	An annual and perennial mix for moister climates that receive over 30 inches of rainfall annually. Also suitable for regularly irrigated sites receiving more than 30 inches annually.
Native Perennial Mixture	A mix of perennials native to the United States. For use across the U.S. except southern Florida and extreme southern Texas.
Shade Mixture	An annual and perennial mix for light shade. Suitable for areas with strong filtered sunlight or 1-4 hours of direct sun per day. Not for dense shade.
Super-Short Mixture	An annual and perennial mix that is less than 10 inches high. Provides a colorful, carpet-like appearance.
