Tips For a Successful Wildflower Garden

For A Successful Wildflower Seeding Project:

1. Start with High Quality Wildflower Seed. Our growing fields are managed by knowledgeable seed growers who are responsible for maintaining proper production and post-harvest cleaning techniques. Species that are difficult to produce are obtained from experienced and knowledgeable collectors. All seed lots are tested for germination and purity to provide assurance that the seed meets industry standards.
2. Analyze the wildflower project site to determine the most appropriate vegetation for the area. The species chosen should be matched to the geographical region as well as the site conditions of the project.
3. Amend the soil if necessary. If you suspect the soil is poor, a soil test is recommended. Add a low nitrogen fertilizer or organic matter if needed.
4. Eliminate unwanted vegetation and weeds. Aggressive weeds such as bindweed and Canada thistle should be sprayed with a general herbicide. Otherwise , tilling or plowing the area is effective. We do not recommend planting into existing vegetation sites such as grass areas or weeds without reducing existing plants by at least 50%. (ideally remove all existing vegetation).
5. Loosen soil by scraping, tilling or scarifying if the soil is very compacted.
6. Sow wildflower seeds at the appropriate time of year and at the recommended planting rate.
7. Provide supplemental irrigation if natural precipitation is not adequate for seed establishment. Consistent moisture is critical during the first 4 to 6 weeks of germination of seed germination and seeding growth.
8. Provide ongoing weed control, which is essential for good establishment during the first year.
9. Evaluate the wildflower project periodically to assess the need for spot seeding, weeding, and supplemental watering.
10. A regular maintenance program will enhance the establishment and performance of your wildflower seeding project and provide assurance that expectations are being met.
