WHEN TO
PLANT YOUR
SEED?

WHEN TO PLANT
#1 Best
planting time is spring... no matter where you live!
When to Plant: The best time to plant in your area
depends on the climate and rainfall patterns as well as the
species you are planting. In cool climates, plant annuals,
perennials or mixtures of annuals and perennials in spring, early
summer or late fall. Fall plantings should be late enough so that
seeds do not germinate until spring. In the north the soil
temperatures need to be low enough that the seeds will remain
dormant until spring, then when the grounds warm up the seeds
will germinate.
Perennials can also be sown
in early fall provided that there are at least 10-12 weeks of
growing time before the plants go dormant for the winter. In mild
climates, plant during the cooler months of the year, fall through
spring, for best results. Perennials generally do not bloom until
second year.
Wildflowers usually will do
best when kept irrigated until established (4 to 6
weeks), so they are best planted in the Spring. You generally can
plant mixtures into the summer if watered until established. In cool season
areas, Wildflowers may be planted in the fall, if seeds are planted
late enough to remain dormant until spring.
In areas with moderate
winters, Wildflowers can be seeded in late Fall, resulting in an early
spring blooming period. An adjacent planting can be made that same
spring to extend flowering blooms into Summer and Fall of the year.
